A close-up view of a tulip flower's petals creates a vibrant abstract pattern.
Going out to shoot with a dedicated macro lens forces you into a perspective that many find limiting and labor intensive, but I find exciting and awe-inspiring. It does mean working slower, hauling along lights, and ignoring any other photo opportunity that may spring up (you can't change lenses that quickly when you see some other interesting thing happening). But it opens up unimagined worlds.
For these tulip images, I used Canon's MP-E 65mm macro lens (a strictly macro lens with a magnification range of 1x to 5x lifesize), and three flashes. One set up as the main light, to the side, to model the flower's shape, the second a ring-flash to fill in the shadows, and the third one set up behind to add a glow through the petals. The magnification (in camera) is 3x life-size.

Smart shopper tip: while choosing to have my images printed on photo quality paper is an economical route to classically displayed artwork, you may be interested in exploring the "ready to hang" options of stretched canvas, metal or acrylic. These beautiful choices, though initially more expensive, are equally archival as the Fine Art Paper and make a stunning, attractive ready-to-hang print that is surprisingly closely priced to matted/framed paper prints.
