  • Stable Fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) and Cecropia caterpillar (Hyalophora cecropia) it had bit. In my observations, the Stable Fly always did the initial damage, which then attracted the Yellowjackets. Undamaged caterpillars always fended off the wasps.

  • Here's a close-up look at a Pennsylvania jagged ambush bug (Phymata pennsylvanica) as it blends in and waits for prey on an Early Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides). You can see the straw-like proboscis it sticks into its prey, folded up against its lower thorax, and the praying mantis-like front legs that do such a great job snaring its victims, which can be over twice its size.
