  • One of the first things you notice about the American Snout butterfly (Libytheana carinenta) is the elongated mouthparts (labial palpi) - which are a great addition to its camouflage. When alarmed, it will fold the front wings behind the rear to hide the orange, black and white areas and, with the antennae held flat to the snout, very effectively pretend to be a dead leaf. This side view of the butterfly resting on a grass spikelet shows the wings folded closed, displaying the colorful markings on its front wings and very distinctive snout.
