  • An immature female Autumn Meadowhawk dragonfly (Sympetrum vicinum) watches for passing prey from goldenrod flowers. The males are red; at sexual maturity (usually a month or two after emerging), the females lose the yellowish coloration for an overall tan/brownish, often with a tinge of red on the upper “tail.” Formerly called the Yellow-legged meadowhawk.

  • A Spangled-winged Thread-waisted Wasp (Ammophila pictipennis) places a larger pebble on its nest entrance to hide it from other insects. These wasps dig a brood tunnel and lay a single egg on a stung caterpillar. Then, before they leave to hunt for additional caterpillars (to ensure the larva has enough food until they pupate), they plug the brood chamber entrance with a larger pebble and hide it with the surrounding sand. Camouflaging the entrance prevents predation and parasitization of their larva by other insects. This image shows the plug pebble covered with sand.

This image shows how it bends its front legs, using the stronger hairs on them to move the sand quickly.

  • One of the first things you notice about the American Snout butterfly (Libytheana carinenta) is the elongated mouthparts (labial palpi) - which are a great addition to its camouflage. When alarmed, it will fold the front wings behind the rear to hide the orange, black and white areas and, with the antennae held flat to the snout, very effectively pretend to be a dead leaf. This side view of the butterfly resting on a grass spikelet shows the wings folded closed, displaying the colorful markings on its front wings and very distinctive snout.

  • Here's a close-up look at a Pennsylvania jagged ambush bug (Phymata pennsylvanica) as it blends in and waits for prey on an Early Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides). You can see the straw-like proboscis it sticks into its prey, folded up against its lower thorax, and the praying mantis-like front legs that do such a great job snaring its victims, which can be over twice its size.

  • Red goldenrod aphids (Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum) feed on an Early Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides). Early-season aphids are generally wingless and don’t lay eggs; instead, they live-birth female nymphs (as seen here), who may also be already pregnant - without male involvement. <br />
Winged females usually develop later in the season, making it easier for them to travel to new plants. In addition, autumn brings on a phase of sexual reproduction, which produces eggs that survive the winter.
