Comfortable Sparrow

A little Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina) takes a break to soak in the early spring sun.

I have to admit I have a soft spot in my heart for Chipping Sparrows.

Such a quiet, unassuming little bird, so easily overlooked, but a tiny treasure once you start noticing them. They are camouflaged well for a life in the leaf litter where you often find them, foraging around and under the grass and weeds for insects and seeds. Until spooked, that is, then a whole patch of dried leaves takes wing!

I've watched over a dozen Chipping Sparrows forage a small area of the yard - first seeing only one or two before noticing more and more - their soft chirps keep them in touch - like a cheerful little song in their hearts as they work together.

One of nature's little lessons in social dynamics!
